Bufoides bhupathyi
Range
Dampa Tiger Reserve, Mizoram, India (only known site)
Bufoides bhupathyi was described in 2023 by Naveen, Tapley, Chandramouli, Jervis, Babu, Meetei and Karunakaran from Dampa Tiger Reserve in Mizoram, after field surveys were carried out to resolve confusion in the genus. It is named for the herpetologist S. Bhupathy, formerly of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History in Coimbatore. It has black and yellow skin and golden irises, and differs from its relatives in webbing between the toes and skin texture. (news reports and Wikipedia on the 2023 description).
Bufoides is endemic to north-east India; the two earlier species, B. meghalayanus and B. kempi, come from the Khasi and Garo Hills of Meghalaya. B. bhupathyi is known only from Dampa and is thought to meet the criteria for a threatened species. It remains possible that the Bufoides species are conspecific. (Wikipedia).
