The bamboo pit viper, also called the Indian green pit viper or common green pit viper, is a venomous pit viper found in the southern and north-eastern parts of India and widespread throughout peninsular India. It grows to a total length of about 99 cm. The upper head scales are small, smooth and overlapping, and the supraocular scale is narrow (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is an arboreal, nocturnal snake, usually found on low to medium-high bushes and trees, often near streams, and it sits in ambush at night at lower heights. It feeds on lizards, rats and birds. Adult females give birth to 6 to 11 young, up to 110 mm long. The type locality is given as Vizagapatam, based on Russell (1796).
