The dusky eagle-owl is a large greyish-brown owl with prominent ear tufts, found widely in South and Southeast Asia. The underparts are greyish white with some dark brown streaks and the dark brown wings have some whitish streaks. The wing is 380–435 mm and the tail 187–224 mm long. It occurs from Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh to Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and China (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is not deterred by daylight, though it is largely active at night, emerging from its roost shortly before sunset, and it has been seen hunting by day in cloudy weather. The nesting season is from November to April, mostly December and January, and it uses stick nests of other large birds, in trees such as Ficus, Mitragyna and Dalbergia; a few pairs have used nests of the red-naped ibis and the Indian spotted eagle. The species is not in SoIB 2023 (Wikipedia, general species account).
