Flat-haired Mouse

The flat-haired mouse, or Indian brown spiny mouse, is found only in India, where it is widely distributed throughout southern and central India (Wikipedia, general species account).

In southern India it is known locally in Tamil as kall-eli, the stone rat, and it has been noted arranging pebbles around the entrances of its burrows. This may help deter predators and stabilise the burrow's microclimate, and some chambers are lined with stones that seem to serve as bedding. The cached account gives no measurements, diet or breeding information (Wikipedia, general species account).
