The greater necklaced laughingthrush is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, and has been introduced to Hawaii. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forest. It was formerly placed in Garrulax but moved to the resurrected genus Pterorhinus after a 2018 study (Wikipedia, general species account).

In mixed-species foraging flocks, greater necklaced laughingthrushes tend to be dominant, and the mimicry of this species by the lesser necklaced laughingthrush, which is not especially closely related, may have been selected for as a result. The cached account gives no description or breeding information. SoIB 2023 rates it a Low conservation priority, a resident forest bird with a Moderate range of about 105,000 km² and insufficient data on trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
