The helmeted guineafowl is the best known guineafowl and the only member of its genus. It is a large, round-bodied bird 53–58 cm long with a small head, weighing about 1.3 kg. The body plumage is grey-black speckled with white, and the head is bare, topped by a dull yellow or reddish bony knob, with bare skin in red, blue or black. The wings and tail are short and rounded (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is gregarious, forming flocks of typically about 25 outside the breeding season that also roost together. Birds are terrestrial and prone to run rather than fly when alarmed, make loud harsh calls when disturbed, and can walk 10 km or more in a day. They may live up to 12 years in the wild. The cached account describes an African species and does not describe any occurrence in India, and it is not in SoIB 2023, so its status on the Indian list should be checked (Wikipedia, general species account).
