The Indian roofed turtle is a freshwater turtle of the family Geoemydidae and a common pet in the Indian subcontinent. It is distinguished by the distinct roof-like ridge at the top of the shell. The arched, elliptical carapace grows to 23 cm and is widest behind the middle. It is brown, sometimes bordered yellow or orange, with a red to orange stripe along the middle, and the plastron is orange or red with black spots, or brown (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is found in the major rivers of South Asia: the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus and Mahanadi drainages. The Reptile Database lists it from India in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. Nesting has been reported from October to March, with a nest cavity 14–20 cm deep, and clutches contain 3–14 elongated eggs, which tend to become bluish at hatching.
