Size

About 8–9cm

The Indian white-eye is a tiny bird, about 8–9cm long, with yellowish-olive upperparts, a distinctive white eye-ring, a yellow throat and vent and a whitish-grey belly, which is yellow in some subspecies. The sexes look alike. About eleven subspecies are recognised. It was formerly called the Oriental white-eye, but was renamed after the South-east Asian populations were reclassified as separate species (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is a resident of open woodland that forages in small groups, feeding on nectar and small insects. It belongs to a superspecies complex whose taxonomy is still unsettled. In India it is resident across a very large range; SoIB 2023 finds its trends stable and rates it a Low conservation priority (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
