Breeds in East Asia and the Himalayas; winters in East Africa and Sri Lanka

The lesser cuckoo breeds in East Asia and the Himalayas and winters as far as East Africa and Sri Lanka. In Japan, where it is called hototogisu, it has long been celebrated in poetry. The cached species account gives no description, diet or breeding detail, so none is given here (Wikipedia, general species account).

SoIB 2023 lists it as a forest bird and a summer migrant in India, with localized winter populations and a moderate range of about 54,000 km². It has too little data for a trend and is rated a Low conservation priority (SoIB 2023).
