Western Ghats of southern India; type locality Cherambady in Wayanad
The Indian black earth snake is a snake of the family Uropeltidae endemic to India, found in the Western Ghats of southern India. The type locality is Cherambady in the Wynaud (Wayanad). Beddome described it in 1864 as bluish black, with broad white blotches on the belly that become larger and more numerous towards the tail, and a uniform bluish-black tail (Wikipedia, general species account).
The scales are in 15 rows round the body and 16 or 17 round the neck, with a small eye and a muzzle more blunt than in Perrotet's shield-tail snake. The Reptile Database lists Tamil Nadu. The account used here gives no information on habits.
