Microhyla rubra

Basic stats

Habitat

Tadpoles in ephemeral pools with fewer aquatic predators

Range

Endemic to India

Size

About 1.2 inches (3cm)

Microhyla rubra, the reddish narrow-mouthed frog, is endemic to India. It was earlier thought to occur in Sri Lanka as well, but new studies suggested the Sri Lankan population is a separate species, M. mihintalei. From snout to vent it measures about 1.2 inches (Wikipedia, general species account).

The snout is rounded and a little shorter than the diameter of the eye. The skin is smooth and reddish brown above with darker sides, and a dark brown line runs from the snout tip through the eye along the side of the back to the groin. The tadpoles prefer ephemeral pools with fewer aquatic predators, live close to the water surface and feed on plankton and suspended food particles (Wikipedia, general species account).
