The New Zealand pipit, or pīhoihoi, is a fairly small, slender passerine of open country in New Zealand and its outlying islands, 16 to 19 cm long and about 40 g. The plumage is pale brown above with dark streaks, with a pale stripe over the eye and dark malar and moustachial stripes. Many authors split the Australasian pipit into the Australian pipit in Australia and New Guinea and the New Zealand pipit (Wikipedia, general species account).
It forages on the ground for small invertebrates such as beetles, spiders and insect larvae, and also eats grass seeds. The cached account does not describe any occurrence in India and the species is not in SoIB 2023; the Indian records of Richard's and paddyfield pipits may belong to this name in an older taxonomy, so its place on the Indian list should be checked (Wikipedia, general species account).
