Psittacula krameri
Range
Tropical northern Africa and the Indian subcontinent; introduced widely
Size
37–43cm including tail
Weight
104–143g (Asian birds)
The rose-ringed or ring-necked parakeet is a medium-sized green parrot, 37–43cm long including its long tail. Asian birds are larger than African ones, weighing 104–143g. Adult males have a pink and black ring around the neck, while females and young birds have no ring or only a faint grey one. The sexes are otherwise alike. Four subspecies are recognised, two in Africa and two in Asia, and genetic work suggests the African and Asian birds may be separate species (Wikipedia, general species account).
It has a split native range in tropical northern Africa and the Indian subcontinent, and escaped pets have founded populations in many other parts of the world, including cities in northern and western Europe, where the birds survive cold winters. It is one of the few parrots to have adapted well to disturbed habitats, urbanisation and deforestation. In India it is resident across a very large range; SoIB 2023 finds its trends uncertain and rates it a Low conservation priority (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
