Northern Indian subcontinent along the Himalaya and parts of Southeast Asia
The rufous-chinned laughingthrush is a mid-sized laughingthrush found along the Himalaya, across the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent and some parts of Southeast Asia, identified by the combination of the black cap and a band on the brown tail. The underparts are greyish and the upperparts have a scale-like feather pattern, with a distinctive pale buff loreal patch and a broad dark moustachial stripe bordering the rufous chin and ear coverts. There is considerable geographic variation in plumage, and the western population, occidentalis of the western and central Himalaya, is greyer and paler, making the dark patterns stand out more (Wikipedia, general species account).
The cached account gives no measurements, diet or breeding information. SoIB 2023 treats it as a Himalayan endemic and rates it a Moderate conservation priority, a resident forest bird with a Restricted range of about 39,100 km² and insufficient data on the long-term trend (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
