The Tibetan macaque is a large, heavily built macaque found from eastern Tibet east to Guangdong and north to Shaanxi in China. Only the proboscis monkey and the larger gray langurs are bigger among Asian monkeys. Males weigh 13–19.5 kg and are 61–71 cm long; females weigh 9–13 kg and are 49–63 cm. The tail is a short stump of 4–14 cm. The fur is long and dense, brown on the back with creamy-buff to grey underparts, adapted to cold (Wikipedia, general species account).

It has also been reported in north-eastern India, but the cached account gives no detail, so its status in India should be treated as unconfirmed here. It lives in subtropical forests at 800–2,500 m. It lives in mixed-sex groups: females remain for life in the group where they were born, while males leave in adolescence, at about eight years old. When a troop reaches 40–50 animals, some split off to form a new group (Wikipedia, general species account).
