The male has a pink-red breast, belly, undertail and forehead, with the chest, back, wings and upper tail dark slate with a maroon wash and a deep red bill tip. It is generally montane, usually found at 1,500–3,200 m though occasionally as low as 300 m, in the north-eastern Indian subcontinent from Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh into northern and eastern Myanmar and south China. It feeds on insects, including moths, stick insects, grasshoppers and bugs, as well as large seeds. Its nests have not been found, though birds in breeding condition have been found in March and April. SoIB 2023 treats it as an eastern Himalayan endemic and rates it a Moderate conservation priority, with a Restricted range of about 7,900 km² (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
