The black redstart is a small passerine of the Old World flycatcher family, 13–14.5 cm long and 12–20 g, similar to the common redstart. The adult male is overall dark grey to black on the upperparts with a black breast, and the lower rump and tail are orange-red, with the two central tail feathers dark red-brown. It is resident in the milder parts of its range, but northern and eastern birds migrate; it breeds widely in rocky habitats across Eurasia and north Africa, from the British Isles south to Morocco and east to central China (Wikipedia, general species account).

It nests in crevices or holes in buildings. The clutch is four to six eggs, usually white but sometimes pale blue, laid daily. The male has a rattling song and a tick call. The cached account does not describe its Indian range in detail. SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority, a winter migrant and localised summer migrant of non-specialised habitat with a Very Large range of about 1.08 million km² and a decline of about 44% over the long term (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
