Lower and middle altitudes of the Himalaya: Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan
The brown-fronted woodpecker is a medium-sized pied woodpecker with yellow in the crown. It is black barred white rather than spotted, with a prominent black moustache extending to the breast and black-streaked white underparts. In the male the forecrown is brown, the centre yellow and the rear red, with a black rear neck; in the female the whole crown is yellow. It ranges across the northern Indian subcontinent, primarily the lower to middle altitudes of the Himalaya (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is found in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan, in temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Some authorities place it in Dendrocopos and others in Leiopicus. The cached account gives no measurements, diet or breeding information. SoIB 2023 treats it as a Himalayan endemic and rates it a Low conservation priority, a resident and altitudinal migrant of forest and plantation with a Moderate range (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
