Indian subcontinent: India, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal

The chestnut-bellied nuthatch is found in the Indian subcontinent, in India, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. It was established as different from the Indian nuthatch and the Burmese nuthatch by Rasmussen and Anderton in 2005, and the white on its ear coverts does not extend into the chin, unlike the Indian nuthatch (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is very similar to the Burmese nuthatch but has a heavier bill and the crown and mantle are the same shade. The wing and tail markings contrast, with silvery edges to the primaries, blackish inner webs to the tertials and large white spots on the tail. The cached account gives no diet or breeding information. SoIB 2023 rates it a Low conservation priority, a resident forest bird that eats invertebrates, with a Moderate range of about 142,000 km² and stable trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
