The cinereous vulture, also called the black vulture, Eurasian black vulture or monk vulture, is a very large raptor of temperate Eurasia and the largest Old World vulture and member of its family, 98–120 cm long with a wingspan of 2.5–3.1 m and a maximum weight of 12.5 kg. The skin of the head and neck is bluish grey and paler above the eye, and the primary quills are often black. It rivals the Himalayan vulture in size. A Korean study of wild birds found an average weight of 9.6 kg and length of 113 cm (Wikipedia, general species account).
It plays an important role in its ecosystems by eating carcasses, which reduces the spread of disease, though it is constantly exposed to pathogens from eating carrion. The cached account gives no detail specific to India. SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority: a winter migrant of open habitat with a rapid long-term decline of about 76% and a Moderate range of about 92,000 km² (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
