It is found in Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar and Nepal, in temperate forest and temperate shrubland. The species name subhimachalus combines the Latin sub, beneath, and the Hindi himachal, snow; it was formerly placed in the genus Pinicola but was moved to the rosefinch genus Carpodacus on the results of phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA (Wikipedia, general species account).

SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority, a resident and altitudinal migrant forest bird that eats plants and seeds, with a Restricted range of about 16,300 km² and insufficient data on trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
