Basic stats

Diet

Habitat

Avoids treeless habitats but may forage there

Range

Breeds from western Europe and Scandinavia east to China; winters in central and southern Africa

Size

About 24cm; wingspan 44–45cm

The Eurasian, or common, golden oriole is about 24 cm long with a wingspan of 44–45 cm and is the only Old World oriole breeding in Northern Hemisphere temperate regions. The male is striking in typical oriole black and yellow, but the female is a drabber green bird. Orioles are shy, and even the male is remarkably difficult to see in the dappled leaves of the canopy. The male Indian golden oriole has a black eye-stripe extending behind the eye, a longer paler red bill and more yellow in the plumage (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is a summer migrant in Europe and the Palearctic and winters in central and southern Africa, and generally migrates at night. Its call is a harsh kweeaahk and its song a fluting weela-wee-ooo or or-iii-ole. It may delay breeding until it is two or three years old. The cached account does not describe its occurrence in India. SoIB 2023 lists it as a bird of uncertain migratory status and non-specialised habitat, without a priority category (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
