Berries (including Lantana), fruit and insects
Habitat
Forest canopy, in small flocks and mixed-species flocks
Range
Endemic to the forests of the Western Ghats in southern India, from southern Maharashtra and Goa southwards
Size
About 18cm
The flame-throated bulbul is about 18 cm long, with an olive-green back and yellow underparts, a squarish black head without a crest and a triangular orange-red throat, and a white iris that stands out against the black head. It is found only in the forests of the Western Ghats, from southern Maharashtra and Goa southwards, and is the state bird of Goa. Populations appear to move seasonally within the Western Ghats. The call, often two or three tinkling notes, can sound like the red-whiskered bulbul's (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is usually seen foraging in groups in the forest canopy for berries and small insects, sometimes in mixed-species flocks. The breeding season is mostly February to April. SoIB 2023 treats it as a Western Ghats endemic and rates it a Moderate conservation priority, with a Moderate range of about 87,300 km² and a decline of about 54% over the long term (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
