The great tit is a small passerine in the tit family, large for a tit at 12.5–14 cm and easy to recognise. It has a black head and neck, prominent white cheeks, olive upperparts and yellow underparts; the nominate race has a bluish-black crown and black neck, throat and bib, with a dull white nape spot turning greenish-yellow on the upper nape. It is widespread and common throughout Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia and as far east as the Amur River (Wikipedia, general species account).

Most great tits do not migrate except in extremely harsh winters. Like all tits it is a cavity nester, usually in a tree hole, and the clutch is often very large, as many as 18, though five to twelve is more common. The female incubates alone, though both parents raise the chicks. Nests may be raided by woodpeckers, squirrels and weasels, and adults may be hunted by sparrowhawks. The cached account does not describe its Indian range. SoIB 2023 rates it a Low conservation priority, a resident of non-specialised habitat with a Very Large range of about 1.17 million km² and stable trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
