The greater white-fronted goose is 64–81 cm long, with a wingspan of 130–165 cm and a weight of 1.93–3.31 kg. It is named for the patch of white feathers bordering the base of the bill, and adults have distinctive salt-and-pepper markings on the breast, which is why it is called the specklebelly in North America. It is closely related to the smaller lesser white-fronted goose (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is migratory, breeding in northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Russia and wintering farther south in North America, Europe and Asia. In the Arctic the window for nesting, incubating and raising a brood to flight is open for only about three months. The cached account concentrates on North American birds and gives no detail specific to India. SoIB 2023 lists it as a winter migrant of wetlands that eats plants and seeds, and does not assign a priority category (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
