The red-breasted goose is a brightly marked goose of the genus Branta, all of which are distinguished by their dark sooty colour relieved by white, unlike the grey geese of the genus Anser. It is 53–56 cm long with a wingspan of 1.16–1.35 m; males weigh 1.2–1.62 kg and females 1.05–1.13 kg. At a distance the red of the breast tends to look dark. Its calls include honking and, in aggression, hissing (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in Arctic Siberia, mainly on the Taymyr Peninsula with smaller populations on the Gyda and Yamal peninsulas. While incubating, it stays within about 1.5 km of its nest. A catastrophic population decline was avoided because the geese altered their migration strategy and now winter in suitable habitats in Bulgaria and the Dobrogea region of Romania. The cached account gives no detail specific to India. SoIB 2023 lists it as a winter migrant of wetlands that eats plants and seeds, and does not assign a priority category (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
