Habitat

Lowland swamp forest

Range

Endemic to India; only the western foothills of the Agasthyamalai Hill Range, Kerala

Mercurana myristicapalustris is the only known species of the genus Mercurana, described in 2013 from the Western Ghats of Kerala. It has been recorded only in the western foothills of the Agasthyamalai Hill Range. The genus name pays tribute to Freddie Mercury, the late singer of Queen, combined with the Latin name for frog. The snout is rounded and protruding (Wikipedia, general species account, genus page).

These arboreal frogs live in lowland swamp forest and breed in the pre-monsoon. They differ from related frogs in having extensively webbed toes. The female, still in amplexus, uses her pointed snout to make a shallow burrow in the soil and lays eggs on the mud, which she carefully mixes with leaf litter using her hind legs. The tadpoles are free-living and aquatic (Wikipedia, general species account, genus page).
