Basic stats

Range

Kurichiyarmala, Wayanad, Western Ghats of Kerala

Size

Males average 12.3mm

Nyctibatrachus minimus is the smallest known frog in the genus Nyctibatrachus. It was recently discovered at Kurichiyarmala in the Western Ghats, in Wayanad, Kerala. Its most distinctive feature is its tiny size: adult males average only 12.3 mm in snout-vent length (15 measured) (Wikipedia, general species account).

Shrinking in size in Nyctibatrachus species seems to be associated with the absence of webbing on the toes and fingers, which may have resulted from evolutionary specialisation to life in terrestrial habitats (Wikipedia, general species account).
