Basic stats

Habitat

Tropical forest to evergreen broadleaf and mixed broadleaf-conifer forest

Range

Mêdog County in south-east Tibet and Arunachal Pradesh, India

The white-cheeked macaque is found only in Mêdog County in south-eastern Tibet and in Arunachal Pradesh in north-eastern India. It is robust with a short, hairless tail and grows dense hair along the neck. It looks very like the Assam macaque, and for years the two were thought to be the same species. It was described in 2015 and is the most recently described of the genus Macaca (Wikipedia, general species account).

It lives in forests from tropical forest to evergreen broadleaf and mixed broadleaf-conifer forest. In April 2016 wildlife photographers and biologists photographed it in Arunachal Pradesh. It is thought to live in small multi-male, multi-female groups. When it detects people it gives a loud, high-pitched alarm call, flees and climbs trees. The cached account has no diet or breeding information (Wikipedia, general species account).
