Endemic to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Andaman cuckoo-dove is a small, slim, rust-coloured dove with a small head and a long tail, endemic to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It lives in heavy evergreen and secondary forest, and is often found in or around forest, feeding mostly on fruits and berries. Its call is a repeated cooing koo, or a double-noted whoo-whup with a slurred first note and a shorter, higher second (Wikipedia, general species account).
The nesting sites, nests and eggs are not known to science, and the breeding season is believed to be February to April. The Department of Environment and Forests of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Zoological Survey of India are monitoring and surveying the species. SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority, with a Restricted range of about 6,300 km² and insufficient data on trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
