Fowlea schnurrenbergeri

Basic stats

Habitat

Fresh water bodies at low to moderate elevations; aquatic vegetation, including water hyacinth

Range

Nepal, Pakistan, India (Himalayan regions, South Bengal and Odisha) and Bangladesh

The bar-necked keelback, or Kramer's keelback, is a non-venomous colubrid. The body is stout, with keeled scales on top and smoother side rows. It is olive brown above with six rows of boxes or bars that gradually fade towards the rear, and the belly is usually yellowish-white or white with a black edge on the side of each belly scale (Wikipedia, general species account).

Unlike the checkered keelback it is narrowly distributed, found around Himalayan regions and in South Bengal and Odisha, in fresh water bodies at low to moderate elevations. It is much more aquatic than the checkered keelback, found in or near water hyacinth and hiding in aquatic vegetation. The Reptile Database lists Odisha, Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
