Basic stats

Range

Peninsular India: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Madhya Pradesh

The widespread fungoid frog is a colourful frog found widely in peninsular India, in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Madhya Pradesh. The Wikipedia account sits under the name Hydrophylax bahuvistara. It is very similar to Hydrophylax malabaricus, with which its range partly overlaps (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is separated from related frogs by a combination of features including a truncated snout in dorsal view, finger and toe tips without a latero-ventral groove, moderately webbed feet and no glandular folds on the shank. A host-defence peptide isolated from its skin, called urumin, destroys influenza virions and protected mice from lethal infection in laboratory tests (Wikipedia, general species account).
