Indirana brachytarsus is found in the Western Ghats, including the Anaimalai Hills. It lives on the ground in evergreen and mixed evergreen forests near hill streams, between 600 and 1,508 metres above sea level, and tends to be found among leaf litter. It has been seen near forest edges but not in fully open areas, and on cardamom, rubber and tea plantations (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its range includes several protected areas: Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The frog lays eggs on wet rocks, and its semi-aquatic tadpoles move across wet rocks and moss using the tail and hind legs (Wikipedia, general species account).
