Nyctibatrachus poocha
Range
Primarily the Western Ghats
The meowing night frog (Nyctibatrachus poocha) is found primarily in the Western Ghats. It is one of 12 species in the genus Nyctibatrachus discovered in September 2011. The species name comes from the Malayalam word for a domestic cat, poocha, because of its distinct cat-like call (Wikipedia, general species account).
The discoveries also led to the rediscovery of three frog species that had not been seen for over 75 years since their original descriptions. According to a press report quoted in the source, these frogs breed without any physical contact between male and female (Wikipedia, general species account).
