Western Ghats; discovered near the Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary

Nasikabatrachus bhupathi, Bhupathy's purple frog, is found in the Western Ghats and was discovered near the Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary. The species name honours the late Indian herpetologist Subramanian Bhupathy (1963-2014). The frog has purple skin and blue eyes and lives underground (Wikipedia, general species account).

It differs genetically, in form and in calls from the closely related Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis. The split is likely caused by the different monsoon seasons on the two sides of the Western Ghats: N. sahyadrensis breeds between May and August and N. bhupathi between October and December (Wikipedia, general species account).
