Basic stats

Range

Eastern Mediterranean and a wide band from sub-Saharan West Africa to Arabia

Clutch size

4 blotchy yellowish eggs

The spur-winged lapwing, or spur-winged plover, is a medium-large wader with a black crown, chest, foreneck stripe and tail. The face, rest of the neck and belly are white, the wings and back light brown, and the bill and legs black. It breeds around the eastern Mediterranean and in a wide band from sub-Saharan West Africa to Arabia, and lays four blotchy yellowish eggs in a ground scrape (Wikipedia, general species account).

Its call is a loud did-he-do-it. The Greek and Turkish breeders are migratory, but other populations are resident. The species is covered by the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds. The cached account does not describe any occurrence in India and the species is not in SoIB 2023, so its status on the Indian list should be checked (Wikipedia, general species account).
