It was previously the only species in the genus Hodgsonius; a large molecular phylogenetic study published in 2010 found it part of a clade that included the common nightingale, and it was moved to Luscinia (Wikipedia, general species account).

SoIB 2023 rates it a Moderate conservation priority, an altitudinal migrant of alpine and cold desert that eats invertebrates, with a Restricted range of about 22,000 km² and insufficient data on trends (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
