Pycnonotus luteolus
Habitat
Dry open scrub on the plains; gardens and woodland with dense shrubbery
Range
Southern India and Sri Lanka
Size
About 20cm
The white-browed bulbul is a bulbul about 20cm long, with a moderately long tail of about 8cm. It is olive-grey above and whitish below, with a white eyebrow, a white crescent below the eye and a dark eye stripe and moustache. The vent is yellowish and there is some yellow on the chin and moustache, but the throat is largely white, unlike the similar yellow-throated bulbul of rockier country. It has three or four hair-like plumes on the nape, and the sexes look alike (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives in dry, open scrub country, mainly on the plains, and also in gardens and woodland with dense shrubbery. It skulks in the vegetation and is hard to see, and is usually detected by its loud, rich, spluttering burst of song, given from the top of a bush before the bird dives back into cover. SoIB 2023 treats it as endemic to the Indian subcontinent and resident with a large range, finds a current increase of about 4% a year, and rates it a Low conservation priority (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
