The buff-breasted sandpiper is a small shorebird, brown above with a buff face and underparts in all plumages, a short bill and yellow legs. Juveniles look like the adults but may be paler on the rear underparts. It is a calidrid sandpiper notable for its long annual migration from the Arctic of North America to the pampas of South America (Wikipedia, general species account).

It breeds in open Arctic tundra of North America, as far north as Alaska and Canada, nesting on the ground with four eggs, and spends the non-breeding season mainly in South America, especially Argentina and Uruguay. In India, one was sighted near Kannur in Kerala in November 2011. SoIB 2023 lists it as a bird of uncertain migratory status in open habitat that eats invertebrates, without a priority category (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
