The common wood pigeon is a large pigeon native to the western Palearctic. It is basically a grey bird with a pinkish breast, told at once from the stock dove and the rock dove by its larger size, 38–44.5 cm and 300–615 g, and by the white on its neck and wing. Juveniles lack the white neck patches, which develop at around six months old (Wikipedia, general species account).

It has a flexible diet, feeding mainly on plant material including cereals, and so is considered an agricultural pest. It is extensively hunted over much of its range, without a major effect on numbers. The cached account describes European birds and gives nothing specific to India. SoIB 2023 lists it as a local and winter migrant of non-specialised habitat, rates it a Moderate conservation priority, and gives a Restricted range of about 24,000 km² (Wikipedia, general species account; SoIB 2023).
