Duttaphrynus stuarti

Basic stats

Range

Nagaland, India (genetically confirmed 2026); also Bhutan

Size

About 75-80 mm (adults)

Stuart's true toad, Duttaphrynus stuarti, is a large toad: adults of about 75 to 80 mm have an inconspicuous ridge on the head and head warts that are less keratinised than in the Asian common toad or the Himalayan toad. The eardrum is indistinct and smaller than the pupil, the belly skin is uniformly granular, and the limbs are barred. (Bhutan Biodiversity Portal species account).

A 2026 short note in Acta Biologica Colombiana gave the first genetic confirmation of the species from India, based on two specimens from Nagaland. Their 16S gene placed them as a sister lineage to D. chandai, with 6.1% genetic divergence. (Acta Biologica Colombiana 2026).
