Euphlyctis adolfi is a skittering frog of the Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis group. A 2022 genetic study by Dufresnes and colleagues separated it from the true E. cyanophlyctis, which they found only in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, so many records of the common skittering frog from the Himalayan foothills and north-east India are now assigned to E. adolfi. The Bangladesh species E. kalasgramensis is treated as a junior synonym. (Reptiles & Amphibians 2024 note and related papers, open access).

In north-east India it has been recorded at 30 localities in Mizoram between 40 and 1,460 m, with a first record for Manipur. The two lineages look very similar and meet along the southern Himalayan slopes with some signs of gene flow, so the authors say more work is needed.
