Size

About 25-30mm

Micrixalus saxicola, the black torrent frog or Malabar tropical frog, is found in forest streams in the Western Ghats. Populations occur throughout the Ghats but are widely separated. It is a small frog, about 25-30 mm from snout to vent (Wikipedia, general species account).

The back is brown, though some individuals have a medium dark yellow back, and the underside is white with irregular white specks on a dark brown throat and chest. The smooth skin and cryptic colouring let it blend into its surroundings while resting or calling on rocks. Tadpoles are thought to be partly fossorial, because females lay eggs in small depressions they dig in underwater sand (Wikipedia, general species account).
