Phayre's langur, or Phayre's leaf monkey, has deep bluish-brown fur with white around the mouth, belly and eyes. The broad white rings round the eyes look like spectacles, which gives it the Bengali name chasma bandor, spectacled monkey. Infants have a straw-coloured natal coat. The tail is usually longer than the body, averaging about 70–75 cm, and average weight is about 7.9 kg for males and 6.9 kg for females (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is found in tropical, deciduous and evergreen forests of north-east India, eastern Bangladesh and western Myanmar. In India the roosting trees it favours are 6–15 m tall with a broad canopy, such as Ficus hispida and Triadica sebifera in Mizoram. Groups usually hold several males and females with a dominant male, though all-male, one-male and one-female groups are also seen. Gestation is about 205 days on average. It has teeth and jaw muscles adapted to eating seeds (Wikipedia, general species account).
